John Collins

Tonight I had to go to an industry party for work at the SF MoMa. I’m not going to review the MoMa here, because it’s my favorite museum in the whole city and it deserves it’s own post, however, I do enjoy going to parties there. Well, usually. Tonight I wasn’t feeling it that much. It felt too obligatory, since it was for work.

My boss and I decided to slip out and go to a bar and on our way to the bar we thought we were going to, we detoured to John Collins. This bar used to be located on a small alley in the South of Market (SOMA) district. Now it has moved to another small alley in the SOMA- Minna Street, which is between Market and Mission and 3rd and New Montgomery. I’ve never bothered going to it after work and now I know why. The space is mediocre, at best. Just a blank sort of space with a few seats around the edges, a DJ and a long bar. The liqour list is impressive, but the place has no soul. Good spririts are not enough in this town to make a place rock and John Collins is no exception.

The crowd was lackluster, as well. Maybe some nights are busier but I just didn’t vibe with this bar. I guess if you’re staying right next door at the St. Regis it might be worth popping in, but I think there are better places to drink downtown.
