John Collins

Tonight I had to go to an industry party for work at the SF MoMa. I’m not going to review the MoMa here, because it’s my favorite museum in the whole city and it deserves it’s own post, however, I do enjoy going to parties there. Well, usually. Tonight I wasn’t feeling it that much. It felt too obligatory, since it was for work.

My boss and I decided to slip out and go to a bar and on our way to the bar we thought we were going to, we detoured to John Collins. This bar used to be located on a small alley in the South of Market (SOMA) district. Now it has moved to another small alley in the SOMA- Minna Street, which is between Market and Mission and 3rd and New Montgomery. I’ve never bothered going to it after work and now I know why. The space is mediocre, at best. Just a blank sort of space with a few seats around the edges, a DJ and a long bar. The liqour list is impressive, but the place has no soul. Good spririts are not enough in this town to make a place rock and John Collins is no exception.

The crowd was lackluster, as well. Maybe some nights are busier but I just didn’t vibe with this bar. I guess if you’re staying right next door at the St. Regis it might be worth popping in, but I think there are better places to drink downtown.

Fail!

Alright my fellow SD folks. I totally dropped the ball today and I apologize for it. I’ve had a productive weekend and a busy day back in reality. I don’t know of any shows this week offhand to post about but I will do my darndest to research and see what is out there tomorrow.

I do know there are some snazzy events coming up next week and the week after which I will be sure to relay to you! I am very much looking forward to that.

Should you get bored and decide to do your own research about what is up and coming, check out the Casbah, SD Reader, CityBeat, or The Belly Up Tavern (something I should have mentioned earlier!)

Some things to keep in mind:

March 10/11- The Silent Comedy and Transfer at The Casbah

March 12- Get Back Loretta at Soma

March 13- Voices in Wonderland at The Onyx downtown (It’s Alice in Wonderland themed and a must go!)

I’ll be sure to update with more as it comes my way. As always, if you know of anything or just want to talk, be sure to leave a comment or send us an email at localmusicnation@gmail.com.

a "Good" hotel...

The Good Hotel at night

My partner and I are going to travel down to San Francisco this weekend.  Our plan is to stop by the Yoga Journal Conference, hang with our friends at lululemon, see a few good yoga peeps and get a little dose (hopefully) of California sunshine before we return back to Vancouver for the chaotic emergence of the 2010 Olympic Games.

Where to stay?  Always a good question.  This time, I used the well-edited list at Tablet Hotels to book a hotel and discovered the aptly named Good Hotel in San Fran’s SOMA district.  Why so apt?  As Tablet points out, “That’s “good” as a noun, not an adjective. San Francisco’s Good Hotel is less about being a good hotel—it certainly is that, in its unassuming way—and more about doing good.”

With a location that’s definitely off the beaten tourist track, rooms that look like super-eco, reclaimed / recycled versions of Dwell magazine’s FSC certified, modern pages; i-pod docking stations to broadcast your favourite playlists, eco-mod furniture and free wi-fi, the hotel; one of the local San Francisco based chain of Joie de Vivre Hotels, which has taken over various old, derelict properties and given them new life and style; seems like its crafted for hipster, urban nomads without large pocketbooks – rooms while being close enough to the city, do not cost an arm or a leg.

Add in the front desk’s “philantropy” concierge, who will help you find last minute volunteering opportunities in the Bay Area, free bicycles that get you around town using your eco-friendly pedal power and an emphasis on reuse, recyle and refashion, this hotel seems like it fits right in with Yogue’s sensibilities: style and eco-living without a sky-high price tag.

The Lobby

i love these "lobby clocks"

a typical double bed room

MAC heaven, the biz centre

By next week, we’ll let you know if our Good Hotel experience is truly Good.

namaste.
